SCUSD FARM -- 16 JUN 2018
21 APRIL 2018
I have an idea for the new SCUSD farm: If designated Killdeer nesting territories in some of the far corners of the farm can be established; it could create a safe havens of sorts for the birds...I thought of this idea a few years ago: create roughly 10 foot long permanent triangular sections in the fencing corners of the farm with some rocks to create a natural setting for the Killdeer's to lay their eggs in...Cats and other predators would not be able to get in if they used simple cyclone fencing; which the Killdeers can easily pass through...For instance; last week there was a Killdeer's nest in the corner of the farm (see photos) and there was also a feral cat sneaking up on the nest -- much to the Mother birds' dismay...And now this week there's a big pile of plant debris on top of the spot and I'm wondering what exactly happened to the nest...

Regardless; this would be a perfect place to make some future habitat as well because the birds have already chosen it...And even in the holding yard where the shipping containers are would be a good location as well; but that would take some SCUSD additional cooperation...The round pile of rocks seen in the second attached photo you see is right outside the SCUSD holding yard...If they could just make a triangular fenced off section in the yard the mother birds may actually use it...I told Jennifer Dericco about it and she wrote:

"Hello, thank you for sharing your idea! I will share it with our Farm planners. The Farm is still being developed and the educational program will be building up over the next several years, so I don’t know that we can commit to something like this right now but it’s an interesting idea to consider when we get further out in time..." -- Adding to this; I have 4 cats so I am in no way against feral cats at the farm...they play an important role in rodent control...protected habitat should be created for the Killdeers; with some low lying dense bushes and carefully placed rocks because rocks look like the eggs and it camouflages them...

REST IN PEACE BABY KILLDEERS
THIS NESTING KILLDEER PROTECTION FLYER WAS FOUND AT THE PETERSON FIELD LAST YEAR -- QUESTION: WHY IS THE KILLDEER POPULATION BEING PROTECTED -- BUT NOT THE KEYSTONE SPECIES GROUND SQUIRREL THAT SO MANY OTHER ANIMALS RELY ON FOR SURVIVAL? WTF!?!

NESTING KILLDEER @ THE PATRICK HENRY PROPERTY / CIRCA 2009
*A shorebird you can see without going to the beach, Killdeer are graceful plovers common to lawns, golf courses, athletic fields, and parking lots. These tawny birds run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they’ve startled up any insect prey. Their voice, a far-carrying, excited kill-deer, is a common sound even after dark, often given in flight as the bird circles overhead on slender wings. > GO TO: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Killdeer/lifehistory

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The Sunnyvale City Council is considering razing the entire strip mall property where The Longhorn Restaurant is located; so tell them what you think about this plan if it matters to you > Council Answer Point @ council@sunnyvale.ca.gov > But! if you are a loyal customer do not stop frequenting The Longhorn; it is not closed yet and will not be for quite awhile even if this plan goes through...

Below is the RESPONSE I RECEIVED FROM THE CITY TODAY. Like so many other FHS students, my first job was at the Longhorn. Was yours? I likely wrote a few of your paychecks if you worked their in the 70s or 80s. :)..."

OFFICIAL CITY OF SUNNYVALE RESPONSE:
"Thank you for inquiring about the property at 102 E. Fremont Avenue. At this time, the City has not received a formal application for redevelopment for this property; however, the site is identified as a “Village Center” as part of the City’s Land Use and Transportation Element of the General Plan. As a designated Village Center, a development plan (Village Center Precise Plan) is required to collectively plan for future redevelopment. The first step to creating this plan, is a Public Engagement Plan, which was recently submitted to the City for the site. The Public Engagement Program is a program intended to gather early input from the community, as well as inform the public of the development review process. This program requires public hearings with the Planning Commission and City Council. More information regarding this process is included in the attached brochure. (Nothing was attached) Public outreach meetings with the surrounding neighborhood is expected to be scheduled in the coming months. To ensure that you are informed of future meetings, you may contact the project planner, Cindy Hom at 408-730-7411 or chom@sunnyvale.ca.gov.

The building and property is NOT currently designated as a Heritage Resource by the City. An evaluation of the site and structures will be undertaken as part of a development proposal, as well as environmental impacts related to potential redevelopment. You may contact Cindy Hom or me at the number/email listed below with further questions. -- Thank you, Ryan Kuchenig / Senior Planner / Community Development Department / Phone: 408-730-7431 / Email: rkuchenig@sunnyvale.ca.gov..."

When I was young the housing you see in the photo above behind the chain link fence used to have farm equipment for the remaining acres that were once directly behind the Patrick Henry property then owned by the Citraro Family (parcels near El Camino were also owned by the Reina family -- Frank Reina used to be on my Little League baseball team) The Citraros' were a family who once owned the Peterson High School property as well...A high school both Citraro brothers once attended; never bragging or making a big deal about their family's good fortune...There also used to be a bunch of stray dogs living behind an older chain link fence who would bark at my friends and I; and we actually used to get the dogs to chase us up on the Patrick Henry "jungle gym" as we called it...My point is; don't worry about walking your dog at the Peterson field -- it's actually a great place for grass roots activism...For instance; the person who told me about the ground squirrels being poisoned last year was out walking his dog at the time...Just don't walk your dog during school hours; try to use a leash if there are other dogs on the field -- and have respect for the Red Tailed Hawk's food supply and try to keep your dog away from the ground squirrel burrows during mating season when baby squirrels start climbing out -- and it's all good...The worst was over a long time ago when wild dogs ran amok and free in these parts; so don't fret about Joe Neighbor's dog...Oh! And remember to bring poop bags and clean up after...
