FULL CIRCLE FARM / 6 JANUARY 2017

UPDATE / 28 OCT 2017 -- Since the last Birdland Free Press update on 16 May 2017 regarding keeping chickens at the new SCUSD farm; I spoke to the new farm manager and he said they will eventually reintroduce chickens to the farm. So this lofty and noble goal of keeping chickens at the farm has finally been achieved; and I want to thank those of you who spoke out on the issue for not being a bunch of chickens. But it appears yet another problem has sprung up as of late in that the new farm manager and/or the SCUSD (not sure which; maybe both because I have seen an SCUSD truck parked inside the farm at night lately) has hired a gopher abatement service that has all but decimated the California ground squirrel population at the Peterson Middle School field in the past few months. (note: there is still a healthy population of ground squirrels nearby at a location I will not specify at this time)

I spoke to a Birdland neighbor while exercising at the Peterson field who said dogs that are walked at the field are getting sick from the rodenticide being used; so what I am asking of you this time around is to contact the various specified entities seen below and ask for natural solutions to control the ground squirrels population at the Peterson field.

Owl boxes were once installed surrounding the farm parcel during the time of the opening of the Full Circle farm by the State of California; but most owls are nocturnal and not crepuscular and/or active around sunrise and/or sunset. Therefore fledgling predatory birds (falcons and/or hawks etc) need to be physically relocated within these various boxes to create an imprint on the farm territory and increase the chances of annual nesting within the boxes. But permission from a government wildlife agency is needed to do this kind of thing; so I have included contact information for various entities including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife so you can make suggestions regarding this important subject.

2) CONTACT THE SCUSD MAINTENANCE AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT AND TELL THEM TO STOP ALLOWING THE MASS POISONING OF GROUND SQUIRRELS AT THE PETERSON FIELD! TELL THEM SINCE THIS IS THE BIRDLAND NEIGHBORHOOD PLEASE REPLACE THIS BARBARIC PRACTICE WITH NATURAL METHODS OF RODENT CONTROL USING THE OWL BOXES INSTALLED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA INSTEAD!

BUT SINCE MOST OWL SPECIES ARE NOCTURNAL AND NOT CREPUSCULAR LIKE GROUND SQUIRRELS; CREPUSCULAR FLEDGLING HAWKS AND/OR FALCONS WHO WILL RETURN ANNUALLY NEED TO BE RELOCATED TO THESE BOXES INSTEAD -- WITH AUTHORIZATION FROM THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE -- FOR LONG TERM GROUND SQUIRREL MAINTENANCE AND/OR SURVIVAL...

GHOST DOG? One night a few years ago while jogging on the Peterson track right about where I took the above photo; I looked over towards the baseball diamond and saw what appeared to be a white colored 'ghost dog' running from the baseball diamond towards the nature area; where it suddenly disappeared. It was a large long-legged dog; perhaps a Doberman or a Greyhound. My intuition tells me this 'ghost dog' used to be brought out to run on the Peterson field by its' owner; or perhaps a dog who used to live on the farm the Peterson property eventually replaced.
